New Year’s Eve is celebrated at millions at parties all over the world. Rising above the ordinary are the legendary gala celebrations hosted by Raffles hotels and resorts worldwide. A tradition of over 120 years, starting at Raffles Hotel, Singapore, since the golden days of Noel Coward, Somerset Maugham and Joseph Conrad, the grand dame has kept revellers mesmerized with stylish celebrations in the famed lobby, with swinging live band and blithe dancing, complete with a spectacular balloon drop at the magic moment of midnight. Throughout the years, this tradition has been transported to other Raffles properties worldwide. Today, each party is an extraordinary experience, replete with gourmet spreads of fine food and wine, and a fitting extravaganza of entertainment to ring in the New Year in true style.
Raffles is also known to organize stellar celebrations that are as glittering as the stars who graced them. Captivating the audience in 2002 was a performance by world-renowned tenor José Carreras, accompanied by the 300-strong Singapore Symphony Orchestra and set against the backdrop of the spectacular Angkor temples. Equally impressive was operatic pop group Il Divo and guitar genius José Feliciano at Raffles Canouan Island in 2007, where they enthralled audiences during a grand gala evening and auction, organized in support of Prince Charles’s youth charity, The Prince’s Trust.

Named after the founder of Singapore, Sir Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles, THOS S.B. Raffles was launched in 2001 as an incubator shop offering lifestyle products as well as a purveyor of fine food and wines. It offers an indulgence in the best of Raffles Hotel culinary innovations ranging from a delightful range of handmade chocolates in traditional as well as unique Asian-inspired flavours to the Raffles branded caviar. THOS S.B. Raffles boasts of a specialist chocolatier and a wine library, and houses a melange of gourmet products.

Writers’ Bar
In tribute of writers who have stayed at the hotel, the Writers’ Bar was birthed at Raffles Hotel, Singapore. The bar fondly remembers classic writers such as Joseph Conrad, James A. Michener and Somerset Maugham, who in 1954 gave permission to Raffles Hotel to use his famous quotation “Raffles Hotel stands for all the fables of the exotic East”.
At the Writers’ Bar in Raffles L’Ermitage Beverly Hills, one can admire the legend of names on the scripts of famous Hollywood movies and films including “The Godfather” which adorn the walls of this perfect little bar.
The same concept is translocated to Raffles Beijing Hotel where the Writers’ Bar honours the many Chinese and foreign literary luminaries - including British playwright George Bernard Shaw, American journalist and writer Edgar Snow, Indian poet Rabindrinath Tagore and Chinese novelist Guo Mo Ro - who have resided, visited or written about the hotel over the years.
JAAN
Taking its name from the ancient Sanskrit word, meaning “dish” or “bowl”, JAAN’s concept is inspired by cuisine of its destination enlivened by modern and unique creative flavours and aromas.
JAAN was first opened in 2001 at Raffles L’Ermitage Beverly Hills and has since seen a loyal following including the likes of Hollywood celebrities and aficionados of Beverly Hills. The menu reflects the creative harmony of several flavours in modern Californian cuisine.
JAAN at Raffles Beijing Hotel graciously revives the tradition of being Beijing’s premier nouveau French restaurant. Today patrons dine in the same spacious room on the ground floor of the 1917 building with majestic French windows and elegant arches. The restaurant serves light, innovative French cuisine with a modern edge.
Raffles Culinary Academy
Taking its tradition of culinary excellence to a new level, Raffles set up an institution offering a variety of cooking and specialty classes called the Raffles Culinary Academy at Raffles Hotel, Singapore.
The Academy provides discerning gourmets, food hobbyists and amateur chefs the opportunity to learn the secrets of gourmet food preparation and fine wine appreciation. The newly redesigned Raffles Culinary Academy seamlessly marries sophistication in kitchen technology with the inviting comforts of home. The highlight of its impressive gastronomic calendar is the Annual Raffles Hotel Wine, & Food Experience, which sees the gathering of internationally-acclaimed chefs, vintners and special guests from around the world, all at one event for five consecutive days.
The spectacular event showcases Michelin-star chefs and prestigious vintners as well as an imaginative element of art represented by a leading artist to complete the ultimate sensory experience. A firm favourite on Singapore’s social calendar since 2000, the Raffles Hotels & Resorts Cup combines the sophistication of a discerning lifestyle with the glamour & thrills of international horseracing. Each of the races is named after a Raffles hotel and resort and is broadcast live via cable TV.
