A day tour through hutongs provides a vignette of how the locals live in Beijing.  Roaming through Beijing's old, narrow streets, hutongs, by old-fashioned pedicab to visit siheyuan, the old quadrangles, and learn about the daily life of ordinary Beijing citizens-- has attracted more and more overseas visitors.

This Hutong tour will start with a visit to Chinese Olympic New stadium. It was once the most outstanding stadium of its type in China with exceptional facilities -- standing proud among sports stadiums throughout the nation. The new stadium is now equipped with all-new capabilities and the quantity of working functional rooms have also been dramatically increased. More than 50 box seats have been are added with open ventilation and natural lighting !

Panjiayuan Antique Market

This famous antique market is Beijing’s biggest and best-known arts, crafts, and antiques market.  Art lovers and collectors can easily spend hours perusing the endless stalls where traditional and contemporary local artists display their wares. There are countless other shops , many of which are makeshift, selling jewelry, beads, home décor, shoes, art supplies and every other Chinese curio or knick-knack imaginable. There is also a huge selection of Buddhist statues and artwork that is usually found in Beijing’s many temples.

Alternative Day Plans

Too much sightseeing and too little time to take it easy? Take a day off organized tours and try the following:

Bike Rentals

Rent a bicycle and traverse some of the remaining hutongs. There is no better way to see Beijing firsthand than on a bicycle but be very aware of cars.

Several professional bike rental companies, as well as major hotels and some hostels, rent bikes on an hourly basis. For those who need the security of a guide, a bike touring company like Bicycle Kingdom Rentals & Tours would be a great way to go.

Beijing Opera

Watch Beijing opera at the Laoshe Tea House (老舍茶馆 Lǎoshě Cháguǎn) just west of Qianmen station. Short opera displays will be in the afternoon (about 40 min).

Longer opera shows will commence in the evenings. Reservations for these shows should be made in advance to avoid disappointment. Tea and snacks are included with the tickets.
