When: October to March Where: Nad Al Sheba Racecourse | | | | | |  | | Dubai Summer Surprises (June - August) | Dubai Summer Surprises was a government initiative begun in 1998 that attracted thousands of tourists during the summer months. Second only to the Dubai Shopping Festival held in spring, Dubai Summer Surprises is a ten week long entertainment event which encourages visitors to shop, save and celebrate. During the festival, Dubai's vast malls collaborate to offer major discounts across a wide range of goods. The pull factor is irresistible - over seven million shoppers flash their credit cards at this event. Besides shopping, live shows, activities, competitions and courses provide good family entertainment as well.
The 2008 event divides up the ten weeks into separate themes - including Food Surprises, Ice Surprises, Arts Surprises, Nature Surprises and Adventure Surprises. Hotels and hotel apartments offer a variety of discounted packages for those who want to make a holiday out of it.
When: June to September Where: Nad Al Sheba Racecourse | | | | | |  | | Dubai Rugby Sevens | The Dubai Exiles Rugby Club hosts the opening round of the IRB World Sevens Series, featuring 16 international teams. In 2004 England won for the first time ever, beating the flying Fijians in a thrilling final. All matches are seven minutes each half, apart from the three finals, which are ten minutes per half. An International Invitation, Gulf, Local Social, Ladies, Veterans and Youth competitions add to the three action-packed days.
International Sevens was born in 1975 as a result of an idea of the then-chairman of the Hong Kong Rugby Union and an imaginative marketing executive.
Initially the Twickenham-based RFU were dismissive of the tournament, so it began its life as a club competition. However, it was soon legitimised as a national tour and has grown in stature ever since, appearing at the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002.
