Singapore Sling Inspires F1

05 May 2009

Highlighting Raffles Hotel on the international map once again is the hotel’s legendary Singapore Sling.  The attractive hot pink cocktail was the inspiration behind the naming of “Turn 10”, one of Singapore Formula One Marina Bay circuit corners.  After careful debate and rounds of deliberation, the tricky chicane “Turn 10” was christened Singapore Sling, perfectly illustrating the dynamism of this turn.

The tradition of naming race circuit corners started at the Le Mans circuit in France during the 1920s.  Many Formula 1 race track corners with special names have gained prominence and since became synonymous with its circuit.

Turn 10 with its triple apex and kerbs, was one of the most talked about and challenging corners of the race circuit during the inaugural night race in 2008.  It saw a number of drivers come to grief, as did Kimi Räikkönen of Ferrari and Giancarlo Fisichella of Force India.  Two other corners, Turn 1 and Turn 7 were named “Sheares” and “Memorial” respectively.
Since it made its debut around the early 1900s, the well-loved Singapore Sling created by talented Raffles Hotel’s bartender Ngiam Tong Boon, has travelled the world and inspired writers and poets.  Singapore Sling marks yet another milestone, almost a century since its inception.

Visitors to Raffles Hotel continue to undergo one of the true rites of passage of world travel - savouring a Singapore Sling.  The iconic status of the Singapore Sling is known and loved internationally, without which any visit to Raffles Hotel is incomplete.
