Location

The island of Singapore is located between Malaysia and Indonesia, surrounded by the Indian Ocean. About 23 percent of Singapore's land area consists of forest, nature reserves and rainforest, primarily Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. The Central Business District (CBD) is on the southern bank of the Singapore river. Chinatown is linked to  the Southwest part of the CBD. To the north of the Singapore River is the colonial district, with its many reminders of British rule. Further north again is Little India and Arab St. Orchard Road runs Northwest away from the colonial district.

 

Climate

The tropical climate of Singapore is largely characterised by its high humidity and abundant rainfall. Temperatures average around 31° C (88 F) in the day and 25°C (75 F) at night.

 

Credit  Card

Credit cards are widely accepted and Automated Teller Machines are commonly available in the city. Finding a money changer is fairly easy within most of the shopping centres.

 

Currency and Exchange

The local currency is the Singapore Dollar. Most international currencies are accepted in banks, hotels and by many licensed money changers in major shopping centres. 

 

Dress Code

Use light summer clothing and dress comfortably.

Always check on the appropriate dress code when attending business events and formal functions.

 

 

Photography

Do seek for permission should you wish to conduct photography or filming at government institutions, military installations, or specific private establishments.

 

Public Transport

Singapore has an efficient public transport system. There are taxis, buses and the modern Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) rail system. Air-conditioned and metered taxis are comfortable and in abundance. Expect extra charges during peak hours and for advanced booking. Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) subway system is clean, punctual, air-conditioned and covers most parts of the country.

 

Language

There are four official languages in Singapore: Malay, Mandarin, Tamil and English. English is widely spoken and it serves as the official language of business and administration. Most Singaporeans are bilingual, and speak their mother tongue as well as English.

 

Religion

Being a multi-cultural society, there are many different religions adopted by the diverse ethnic groups of Singapore. The main religions are Islam, Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Judaism. Temples, Christian, Catholic churches, mosques and other places of worships are common sights all over the island.

 

Safety

Increasingly, personal safety and security are becoming critical concerns of international travellers. Singapore is often regarded as one of the safest cities to visit in the world.
