The Straits Settlement (Singapore, Penang and Malacca) were administered from Singapore. The term was in use during the years Raffles Hotel was in its heyday.

The name ‘Strait Settlements’ conjures up images of steamy jungles, rubber planters, rich tin mines and the writings of Joseph Conrad and Somerset Maugham.
