Built for the 1889 World Fair, held to commemorate the centennial of the Revolution, the Eiffel Tower was one of the world's tallest structures at 320 m (1050 ft) until recently. The tower has become a global icon of France and is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. Three levels are open to the public and there are elevators to the top but they have long queues. Walking up the stairs to the 1st or 2nd platforms in the south pillar is the way to avoid the queue. Guided visits are also available.
