Personality Suites

Raffles Hotel Le Royal, Phnom Penh, offers four specially created personality suites named after famous dignitaries who once stayed at the hotel. Each suite is luxuriously appointed and contains memorabilia and artifacts associated with their namesakes. The Personality Suites are located in the hotel’s original building, the Landmark Block., and are 48 sq metres in size.

The Jacqueline Kennedy Suite

The Jacqueline Kennedy Suite honours the former US First Lady who visited Cambodia in 1967, fulfilling her lifelong dream of seeing the Angkor Wat. During her stay in Phnom Penh, she was hosted to dinner by Prince Sihanouk and presented with a filigreed silver tray, finger bowls and plates as well as a leather bound copy of President Kennedy’s ‘The Strategy of Peace.’

The Charles de Gaulle Suite

The Charles de Gaulle Suite is named after the French General and President who visited Cambodia in 1966 and he was a good friend of King Sihanouk. General de Gaulle, who was the first French Head of State to visit Cambodia, received a rapturous welcome from the Khmer people and was bestowed with many honours during his visit. These honours included being made a General-in-Chief of the Khmer armed forces, becoming an honorary citizen of Phnom Penh, receiving a golden key to the city and a receiving a Grand Collar of Independence set with diamonds.

The Somerset Maugham Suite

The Somerset Maugham Suite is named after the well known writer, who was a frequent visitor to South East Asia. During his months in Burma, Thailand and Indochina, Maugham dictated more than 70,000 words which were later fashioned into the book ‘The Gentleman in the Parlour: A Record of a Journey from Rangoon to Haipong.’
The Andre Malraux Suite

The fourth Personality Suite is named after Andre Malraux, the talented avant-garde French writer and art lover, who visited Cambodia in 1923 with his wife Clara. In an infamous incident, the couple was arrested for removing several pieces of sculpture which formed one of the female figures of Banteay Srei, tried and sentenced, but released on appeal. On his return to Indochina, Malraux launched a political attack against colonial exploitation, an expenditure he later romanticised in La Voie Royale (the Royal Way) published in 1930. Malraux was also appointed by Charles de Gaulle as Minister of Cultural Affaires (1960-1969).
