The heart of where modern Singapore was built upon, the Civic District was planned by the country’s founder Sir Stamford Raffles in 1822. Today, some of the most historic buildings have been restored and reincarnated as museums and event spaces.
For instance, Singapore’s former Parliament House (and before that, the Court and government offices) has now been renamed The Arts House and plays host to exhibitions. The Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall reopened in July 2014 after a four-year renovation.
On the fringe of the Civic District is the distinctive Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay. Affectionately named “the durian” by locals, the building is recognisable for the “spikes” that cover the roof. Inside, a range of venues can be found that have witnessed many a memorable artistic and cultural performance.
