Orchard Road, the city's most exciting retail and entertainment hub, is a popular attraction among tourists and locals. Whatever the budget, the material temptations are plenty along this 2.2km stretch in central Singapore that is best explored on foot.
Most shopping malls have an anchor tenant – usually a major department store – and other smaller retailers. Gems for the picking range from designer labels, to mid-range goods and budget items. Some popular malls to check out are ION Orchard, Wisma Atria, Tangs, Ngee Ann City, Paragon, Mandarin Gallery and The Heeren.
Looking at it today, it is hard to imagine that the road was named for the fruit orchards, nutmeg plantations and pepper farms that once lined it. Following that, it later evolved to contain outdoor hawker centres, wet markets, temples and even a cemetry. In 1903, the first supermarket opened where The Centrepoint is now located, and the fate of this little street in Singapore was sealed forever.
