No visit to Singapore is complete without a visit to the Peranakan Museum, one of the most popular here. Ten permanent galleries are spread over three floors that spin the tale of the rich heritage and culture of this indigenous ethnic group. Highlights include the set up for an elaborate 12-day wedding, and stories of the prominent Peranakans in Singapore.
Peranakan culture emerged in the 19th century as immigrants from China wedded the indigenous Malays in Singapore, Indonesia, Penang and Malacca. Their story is told inside a beautifully conserved neoclassical building that used to be the Tao Nan School, the first Hokkien one to be established in the Straits Settlements.
