Golden Chersonese is the name given to the Malay Peninsula in Roman times. It first appeared on a map by Ptolemy, the Greek mathematician, around 200 A.D. and continued to appear on maps up to the 16th century. (Chersonese is the Greek word for Peninsula).
The name was resurrected by the 19th century traveller and writer, Isabella Bird, with her book ‘The Golden Chersonese: Travels in Malaya in 1879.
Between the two world wars, the fast train between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur was christened :The Golden Chersonese.
