The exquisite Chateau de Versailles on the outskirts of Paris is a must-see. Built in the mid 17th Century by the Sun King Louis XIV, and later home to Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, the décor is opulent and splendid. Painted frescos, marble walls and canopied beds topped with ostrich feathers are just some of treasures inside. The palace’s opulence reaches its peak in the Hall of Mirrors, a 75m-long ballroom with 17 huge mirrors - once home to lavish balls, and more soberly, site of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I. Outside the vast formal gardens are famed for their sculptures, geometrically aligned terraces, flowerbeds, and fountains.
