Explore a protected nature reserve close to Clear Water Bay

A state-protected nature reserve, Nanwan Monkey Island is home to 400 species of tropical plant, 100 animal species and a population of 2,500 macaque monkeys. Despite its name, the reserve is not in fact an island, but occupies the Nanwan peninsula bordering Xincun harbour to the north-east of Clear Water Bay. It is accessible by China's longest over-water cable car from Xincun. Since the 1,000-hectare reserve was established in 1965, it has become China's largest area for raising and training monkeys, and is the only island nature reserve in the world that protects the endangered macaque species.
