Introducing Jeddah
An ancient trading port with a rich history, Jeddah is the largest coastal city in Saudi Arabia, sometimes referred to as 'the bride of the Red Sea'. Its name is thought to have derived from 'jaddah’, meaning ‘grandmother’ in Arabic – from the belief that the tomb of Eve, the 'grandmother of humanity', is located in the city. Jeddah began life around 3,000 years ago as a small fishing village, and from the 7th century AD onwards it was a major port for Indian Ocean trade routes, channelling goods to Mecca. It was also the gateway for Muslim pilgrims who arrived by sea, and remains the main stopover point for visitors to Mecca and Medina from around the world today. Jeddah is the Saudi Kingdom’s fourth richest and most cosmopolitan city, home to a diverse population of four million people, of whom only around half are Saudis. This perpetuates the sense of movement and blending of cultures that has always characterised the city. Trading, business and craftsmanship remain strong features, as does a vibrant art and culture scene, with the rise of Saudi creatives in the realms of art, fashion design and influence. While looking to the future, Jeddah also takes great pride in its traditions and heritage – from its famed art of hospitality, to its centuries-old architectural legacy and elaborate crafts.
The design
Discover an environment of contemporary luminosity, that poetically nods to Jeddah’s multifaceted heritage. An elegant golden door opens into a lobby whose intricate mashrabiya screens create a mesmerising atmosphere, shaped by ever-evolving natural light. The delicate lace pattern on the walls is inspired by the plaster motifs in the old town. The art collection adds a final layer of discovery, elevating each space with works from renowned contemporary artists from Saudi Arabia, the Middle East and the world, in harmony with the design.
Natural light magnifies the architecture, reflected on the iridescent mirrors and tall, metal-clad columns, alluding to the fluid reflections of light on water. From the lobby to the outdoor deck, from the guest rooms to the ballroom, all key spaces are facing the sea, connecting visitors to the calming effects of the water and horizon. In every space, curved pieces of furniture and organically shaped objects inspired by raw elements add a feel of connection to nature.
Raffles Jeddah art collection
Calligraphy and Islamic art and architecture have been refined in Saudi Arabia over millennia, shaped by myriad influences at this crossroads of civilisations. Today, Jeddah is a thriving centre for contemporary artists drawn from across the Middle East – a diverse heritage reflected throughout the Raffles Jeddah art collection.
The curatorial approach works in subtle harmony with the design of the hotel itself, mixing works from established contemporary painters and emerging local photographers. All have been commissioned specifically for Raffles Jeddah, inviting you to explore spaces of great beauty.
A roster of resident artists, selected for the in-room and in-suite art collections, reflects Jeddah's vanguard spirit. The talents of tomorrow are as diverse in technique as they are in style, and include Noorah Kareem’s abstract canvases exploring identity and self-expression; Zain Zedan's geometric pieces rooted in religious symbolism and astronomy; Alhanouf Allaboun’s textile artistry blending traditional fabric-dyeing with sustainable modern practices to produce pieces related to motherhood in desert colours; Sarah Al Johani quranic verse-inspired pen-and-pencil series; and Ammar Jiman's mixed media works in rich muted colours.
