The OWO’s history is written into the exclusive Whitehall Wing which occupies the iconic main façade of Raffles London. This self-confident west-facing wing looks out over historic Whitehall, a highly significant location. Whitehall has been at the heart of government and state power for a millennium, and it is the major processional route between Westminster and Trafalgar Square, opposite Horse Guards, and the official gates to Buckingham Palace.
With six opulent suites, the historical Haldane Suite is in the centre and reached by the Grand Hall and Staircase. It is one of the principal rooms on the second floor and formerly the office of the Secretary of State for War and latterly Sir Winston Churchill.
This historic suite can be combined with two rich British art deco Corner Suites named after Viscountess Astor (Astor Suite), the first woman seated as a Member of Parliament, and Clementine Churchill, Churchill’s beloved wife (Clementine Suite). These Corner Suites are in historic circular tower rooms at the corners of Raffles London and were once occupied by senior members of the Army Council.
This wing truly reflects the balance of history and modernity, luxury and dignity and is painstakingly restored to a former grandeur by talented artisans and specialist craftspeople, and guided by leading academic and architectural authorities. Customised carpets, fabrics and wallcoverings show a contemporary interpretation of the classic Edwardian style befitting the history and splendour of the building.
Whether sitting at an antique desk positioned in the exact location and similar in style and scale to the one used by Churchill himself, entertaining on the six-person mahogany dining table in The Haldane Suite, or watching the changing of the guard from The Clementine Suite, every detail of this wing tells a story of the past and creates memories for the future.
