Khor Al-Adaid
An otherworldly landscape lies just north of Qatar’s border with Saudi Arabia, one of the few places in the world where the desert meets the ocean.

With geomorphic elements rarely seen in other climes, the Inland Sea is a veritable global treasure. It astounds with rolling sand dunes, stony deserts, soaring mesas, ephemeral coastal sabkha (salt flats), and recently discovered hummocks covered in salt and gypsum. A long, deep passage channels water from the Arabian Gulf into a vast body of shallow, crystal clear water that reveals fascinating microbial mats at low tide. The region is home to a diverse array of native species – including endangered dugongs and turtles – and populations of migrating and resident birds. Also found here is the national animal of Qatar, the Arabian oryx.

This ecosystem has long supported Bedouin settlements, as evidenced by the archaeological and cultural sites that dot Khor Al-Adaid. Its remoteness also sheltered seafaring pirates – who were adept at navigating the convoluted shores and shifting topography of this strange land – during the 1800s. Today, the region is largely uninhabited though widely admired for its profound beauty.

Khor Al-Adaid became a nature reserve in 2007 and is currently on the tentative list of UNESCO Natural World Heritage sites. For more information on exploring this fascinating place, contact a Raffles concierge.

Art and Architecture
In addition to stunning deserts and majestic shorelines, Qatar lays claim to incredible examples of man-made genius. One of them is Katara Towers, a striking masterpiece that showcases the country’s heritage and daring vision all at once.

When in Doha, be sure to discover other singular architectural works, such as the National Museum with its stylised desert rose formation, and the Museum of Islamic Art designed by renowned architect I.M. Pei. The 40,000-seat Al Wakrah Stadium is the brainchild of Zaha Hadid, who was inspired by traditional wooden dhows when designing the ultramodern structure.

Some buildings serve as canvases for local street artists, who transform façades into dramatic murals that reflect their philosophical leanings and sense of humour. When driving around Doha, make a point to travel along the Salwa Road underpass to see 52 individual examples of “calligraffiti” by French-Tunisian artist eL Seed.

Whale Sharks
From April through September, the planet’s largest fish congregate in the crystalline waters off the north-eastern tip of Qatar. Here, hundreds of whale sharks gather annually to feast on their favourite food: the eggs of the smaller fish that breed in this unique ecosystem’s relatively cool waters.

Until very recently, this zone has been closed to everyone except locals and researchers. To introduce the public to this majestic gentle giant, the country is slowly allowing a very limited number of people to encounter them in their natural habitat. Please contact a Raffles concierge for more information about whale shark boat excursions.

Shopping Meets Tradition

Immerse yourself in Qatari culture by spending time at a venue that has served as the epicentre of everyday life for more than a hundred years. Historic Souq Waqif is a wonderfully labyrinthine marketplace filled with one-of-a-kind shops and unique items.

Bedouins and merchants once gathered here to trade, barter and buy. Today, the century-old building is set against futuristic skyscrapers, but its stalls are still laden with spices, perfumes, textiles, gems (especially pearls from local divers) and animals ranging from falcons to camels. Between discoveries, relax at one of the many cosy eateries or shisha bars.

It is easy to explore the marketplace on your own. But to get the most out of this experience, go with a resident who can provide commentaries on local culture – and help you buy high-quality goods at the best prices. Contact a Raffles concierge for more information about arranging a guided tour of Souq Waqif.
